NADH Coenzyme 1

NADH (Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide) is the active coenzyme form of Vitamin B3 and is also referred to as coenzyme 1*. NADH is present in every human, animal and plant cell and required for the energy production and thus for the survival of every cell.

NADH is the required coenzyme for numerous enzymes and controls more than 1000 different metabolic reactions of the body. The body's natural reserves of NADH will decrease with age which also reduces the physiological energy and health potential.

*Definition of «coenzyme»: A coenzyme is the active centre of an enzyme and directly involved in the biochemical reaction concerned. The vitamins are the direct precursor of the coenzymes.

Biochemical Function:

NADH increases the production of ATP* (Adenosine Triphosphate) in the cell occurring in the course of the metabolisation of the nutrients.

*Definition of «ATP»: the chemically accumulated form of energy in our cells and the direct energy source for all activities and accomplishments in each and every cell of the body.
The energy-conveying biomolecule NADH is responsible for the final and crucial step of the so-called cellular respiration, i.e. the oxygen-dependent (aerobic) energy metabolism. In this process the ATP is produced from glucose and oxygen with the aid of the hydrogen conveyor NADH.
The heart is the organ having the highest NADH concentration – approximately 90 mg per kg heart weight. The brain as well as a muscle contain 50 mg/kg.

Natural Occurrence:

Meat, fish und poultry contain the most NADH. However, it is either already lost when the meal is cooked, or it is broken down in the digestive tract, among others by the gastric acid, if raw food is taken in. The organism predominantly has to produce NADH itself, an intense supply of vitamins (primarily from the B complex) and amino acids being required for this purpose.

Scope of Application:

  • Key factor for the energy metabolism and the energy production
  • Promotes the blood flow and the performance of the brain
  • Enhancement of the muscular capacity (more ATP in the muscle)
  • Promotes the integrity of the body cells and the body's defences
  • Increases the production of the so-called happiness hormones as coenzyme in the conversion of the amino acid tyrosine into dopamine (a neurotransmitter known as happiness hormone in the vernacular).
  • Protection against free radicals
  • Reduction of the negative effects of lack of sleep, jet lag, stress
  • Intensification of the libido
