L-Glutathion which is composed of the amino acids glutamic acid, cysteine and glycine is the most important intracellular antioxidant and the quantitatively principal intracellular thiol.

Definition of «thiol»: from Greek thion = sulphur; the term thiol pool designates the total reserve of sulphurous amino acids and sulphurous peptides (longer amino acid chains) in the organism.

Biochemical Function:

Glutathion is present in the body in two forms: as active, reduced Glutathion (G-SH) and as oxidised Glutathion (GSSG). In a healthy state the ratio of reduced to oxidised Glutathion is at least 400 : 1. Together the two forms constitute a biological redox system, i.e. an interaction of electron absorption (reduction) and electron release (oxidation). The Glutathion redox system is deemed the most important detoxification system of the human body.

Glutathion is involved in the optimisation of a variety of biochemical functions: enzyme reactions, protein biosynthesis, cell division, prevention of cell mutations, function of all cell receptors, prevention of damage to the cell membrane, regeneration of important contaminant-capturing substances and immune functions.

Natural Occurrence:

Garlic, onions, and brassica contain plant compounds activating the Glutathion enzymes. Broccoli, parsley and spinach are rich in Glutathion.
